Jaw and rotary crushers are suitable for breaking hard to moderately hard materials such as granite, basalt, porphyry, greenstone, limestone, ores, slags and the like. Softer materials clog the fracture gap. The reduction ratio corresponds roughly to the ratio of the maximum width of the mouth to the minimum width of the gap and approaches a value of 1:5 to 1:8. In the case of jaw crushers, distinctions are made in accordance with the principles of design between toggle, single-toggle, beater and hydraulically operated crushers as well as Rotex crushers. In the case of rotary crushers, distinctions are made between cone, Symons, jacketed and rotary jaw crushers. The rotary crushers have a larger throughput than the jaw crushers but are more expensive to construct. Roller crushers can be used for hard to soft materials; soft and plastically deformable materials are crushed using knife crushers and stamp mills.

In the case of jaw crushers, the feed is smashed either between a fixed and an oscillating jaw or between two oscillating jaws. The drive can be either mechanical or hydraulic. With single-toggle crushers the motion of the eccentric shaft is transferred directly to the swing jaw which is suspended like a pendulum from the gudgeon pin and supports the backing plate at point. This machine also has a return spring and a flywheel. The design of the single-toggle crusher is simpler than that of the Blake jaw crusher. However, as a result, the bearing of the eccentric is more severely loaded.
